What is Sea Salt?

If you recall your chemistry class from high school you may recall the compound NaCl ~ otherwise known as common salt or sodium chloride.  It is a combination of Sodium and Chlorine (Chloride).  As a mineral, salt is known as halite.  Salt occurs naturally in many parts of the world and can be found in salt beds, salt lakes, dried up salt lakes, which become deposits in the earth and of course the largest source of salt ~ our world’s seawaters.  Salt can be harvested from salt waters directly by collecting salt water and then evaporating the water out of it.  Salt can also be collected directly from deposits where ancient seas once were, such as in Utah, US as well as the Himalaya’s in Pakistan.  Both methods work great and can leave the salt and its associated minerals fully intact.  The only difference between the two is that collecting salt from the oceans of today means there is the consideration of the current pollution we have subject nature to over the past century or so.  Ancient salt beds that were from time long ago were not likely subject to the same toxins our seas are today.  This would be the main differing factor between current salt-water sources and ancient sources long dried up.

Sodium chloride, or salt, crystals are most often square shaped and can range in color from white, grey, pink, brown and even very pale blue.  The multitudes of colors are representative of the minerals that are found in the salt.  It is these very minerals that make salt such a positive force for our health and well-being.  Unfortunately, many salts are stripped of all of these amazing and healthful minerals in processing.  All of these procedures can damage and diminish the good stuff found in natural sea salt.

You are likely familiar with the idea that your body is 70% or so water, yes?  Well, it’s not just any old water; it is saline water or salt water.  Salt is essential to the balance of your body.  If you were admitted to a hospital today for a serious health concern you would find a nurse looking for the largest vein in your arm so that they could give your body an IV to help your body stay balanced.  Although you don’t normally get salt through an IV in everyday life, the point remains that it is still an essential part of your health.

So, you ask, why all the caution and news about salt and its negative effects on our health?   Good question.  Well the processed iodized salt, also known as table salt or common salt that we use today is not the same as real sea salt.  This processed salt, as mentioned above, is stripped of its valuable minerals, processed using chemicals and can contain additives such as dextrose and other agents.  All this processing leads to that pristine, totally white and uniform appearance.  However beautiful in appearance this salt is not so good for your health and has been known to contribute to a myriad of conditions and health concerns.  This is why you want to consider using the good stuff, the unadulterated, mineral rich sea salt.

Through out this site you will see multiple ways that you yourself can use this valuable resource to contribute to your own health.  The ways are many and include sea salt baths, sea salt scrubs, sea salt cleanses and sea salt as a cleaning agent.  Now matter how you shake it this is a very useful and powerful agent, inexpensive to buy yet rich to your system and body.  We invite you to explore how salt can work for you in different ways and why you may want to keep a good amount of it on hand from this point on.
